Sunny Beach is the biggest tourist centre in Bulgaria, as well as the most popular. It is located on the coast of the Black Sea, about 35 km (21.8 miles) north of the town of Burgas and in the municipality of Nessebar or Nesebar. This is precisely the location of the Iberostar Sunny Beach Resort, a 4-star hotel which has been recently renovated and equipped with all the comforts and services for a simply ideal beach holiday.
In Sunny Beach, you can enjoy a magnificent combination of beautiful maritime landscapes and mountainous areas, all accompanied by a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and moderate winters.
The wonders of this costal destination are not limited to just natural treasures. It is no coincidence that Nesebar, a spectacular city museum with a history going back more than three millennia, is popularly known as the pearl of the Black sea. Nestled on the former border of a threatened empire, it preserves vestiges of occupation by diverse civilizations. Hence, UNESCO decided to include it in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1983.
What are you waiting for? Come and find out for yourself.
Among the places to see in Sunny Beach, the casino stands out. Built in 1938 it contains striking architectural elements. Admire the building of the Customs, symbol of the city and home of the National Statue of Culture. A little further south, you will find the Strandzha Nature Park, the largest concentration of deciduous forests in Europe, this area contains five nature reserves and 14 protected spaces.
Nor should you miss the beautiful city of Nesebar, whose old town is connected to the European continent by a narrow man-made isthmus. This city, which was originally a Thracian settlement during the second millennium BC, and has been home to Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians, who conquered it for the first time in the year 812 AD. Much later in 1925, after the departure of a community of Greek winemakers and fishermen, a new city was built, and the old town was restored.
In regard to the main monuments of Nesebar, the church of Christ Pantocrator, is a classic, built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and is excellently preserved. It is built in a Byzantine style with a Latin cross shape and presents a construction technique known as Opus Mixtum. The most remarkable feature of the church is the rich decoration and the colour of its exterior areas.
Do not miss the Saint Sofia church, originally from the 5th century (although its current appearance is from the ninth), or the basilica of the Holy Virgin Eleusis built in the sixth century as part of a monastic complex. It consists of three naves, three apses and a narthex, with two smaller apses on the north and south sides. Finally, spend some time to admire the Saint John the Baptist church, topped with a remarkable dome.
If you want to leave all your cares behind, there is nothing better than a relaxing walk through the picturesque cobbled streets of the old town of Nesebar, dotted with cosy restaurants where fish is the star of the show.
The southern area of Sunny Beach offers 8 km (5 miles) of beaches and natural dunes, while the north is dominated by the Stara Planina mountain.
The town also accommodates the Action Aquapark, the Sunny Beach Luna Park; carting, tennis courts, recreational boat rental services, water sports companies, surfing, diving, snorkelling, water skiing, Turkish baths, spas and a wide range of nightlife, consisting of bars, pubs and nightclubs. But if what you want is to go shopping, you can't miss the Royal Beach Mall, an important shopping centre.
Speaking of shopping, a typical Bulgarian souvenir is rose oil, as this country is specialized in the cultivation of these flowers. Don't forget to take some home!
Are you a foodie? In that case, you’ll be pleased to know that in Sunny Beach you will find more than 150 restaurants. In any of them you have the chance to try some of the most traditional Bulgarian cuisine, such as a shopska salad, originally from Sofia, the national capital; kebapcheta (spicy minced meat), kavarma (a mild curry from Turkey and India) and, of course, the famous Bulgarian yoghurt.
You can also make the most of your time in the Black sea to get to know the hospitality and lifestyle of the Bulgarian people, as well as learn about their folk music, folk dances and the typical costumes that characterize the traditional Bulgarian culture.
North of Nesebar, you will find another interesting tourist resort called Slamtxev Briag, with plenty of entertainment options for the whole family, and don't forget the vibrant coastal city of Varna which is also nearby.
