Things to see in Malaga

Without a doubt, the flagship of the Costa del Sol is the capital of the province, the magnificent city of Malaga. With more than half a million inhabitants, it is the sixth largest city in Spain, by population, and the second largest in Andalusia. Located at the feet of the Montes de Málaga mountain range in the valley of the Guadalhorce River, close to a beautiful bay surrounded by mountains, this city of Phoenician origin offers visitors countless attractions revealing the fascinating history of Malaga.

So, what to see in Malaga? Start with the most remarkable buildings, mainly located in the old town, such as the beautiful Cathedral of the Incarnation, popularly known as La Manquita or one-armed lady. Standing next to the Episcopal Palace it is an amazing point of interest itself. Don’t forget to visit the Alcazaba of Málaga, a palatial fortification built by the Hammudid dynasty in the early 11th century and considered the best-preserved Moorish citadel in Spain. Pay a visit to the Roman amphitheatre, discovered by chance in 1951, the Castle of Gibralfaro dating from the 14th century and the Church of Santiago, and of course you can’t miss the Picasso Museum, dedicated to the artistic heritage of one of the most illustrious sons of the city.

As you can see, it is not surprising that Malaga was awarded the status of European Capital of Culture in 2016.

Furthermore, the Costa del Sol has many other noteworthy places such as the coastal town of Estepona for example. Once there, take a walk through the old town to see the picturesque Plaza de las Flores and enjoy the promenade, the orchid house and botanical garden, or follow the intriguing Route of Artistic Murals helping to turn the city into an open-air museum by the sea.

Finally, being in Malaga province you can’t miss visiting Marbella with its exclusive Puerto Banus marina. Choose to stay at our Marbella Coral Beach hotel located just one kilometre from Puerto Banus and it will be easy to experience the incomparable atmosphere and enjoy the city. In addition, close by you can find Río Verde, an old Roman town dating back to the 2nd century AD, with some impressive mosaics.

When it comes to Malaga tourism, its unbelievable beaches are without a doubt the number one attraction. Choose to stay at Iberostar Costa del Sol, one of the best Estepona hotels, and you will understand why one should go to Malaga to enjoy some of the most outstanding beaches in the Costa del Sol. There are the amazing, small, quiet beaches of La Rada and Del Cristo in Estepona, or however, if you choose our hotel in Torrox, you will find worthy alternatives in the Calaceite, Vílchez, Mazagarrobo and Playa Ferrara beaches.

In turn, in Marbella you can also find some of the best beaches in Spain suitable for everyone such as the beaches called Bounty, Nikki Beach, Río Real, Real de Zaragoza, Nueva Andalucía, Alicate, Cabopino, Nagüeles, La Fontanilla, and Playa Hermosa so it’s not going to be easy to choose.

If you visit the city of Malaga, the capital of the province, you still will be able to relax on the beach. La Malagueta, Palo and La Misericordia are the three city beaches turning the city into one of the best holiday destinations in Spain for families. But beside beach time the provincial capital also offers the chance to enjoy an astonishing panoramic view from the viewpoint at the top of Gibralfaro hill or get to explore the legendary Passage “Chinitas”; built on the territory of an old convent, it is mentioned in the works of Federico García Lorca.

Moreover, despite being best known for having some of the best beaches in Spain, the Costa del Sol is also an ideal place for hiking, thanks to the Baetic Mountains and the Montes de Málaga Natural Park.

The Province of Malaga is home to more than half of all the golf courses in Andalusia; therefore, the Costa del Sol is also an excellent destination for fans of the sport. In fact, the best golf courses in Andalusia can all be found in Marbella, Estepona and the surrounding areas.

Finally, if you are on holiday in the Costa del Sol in August, we encourage you to experience the Feria de Málaga, an event offering concerts, fireworks, flamenco shows, processions and a wide range of other activities. Similarly, Dia de las Migas” in December, is one of the most deep-rooted festivities in Torrox. And, of course, what Spanish festivity is complete without some incredible tapas? In the Costa del Sol, you can try many typical tapas from the Malaga region.
