The main beaches at Playa de Muro
The beaches in Playa de Muro, on Alcudia bay, are characterised by white sand, crystal-clear Mediterranean water and long unspoilt or undeveloped areas. The bathing areas in Playa de Muro boast a high level of conservation and, despite being in one of the most touristy areas in Majorca, welcoming thousands of visitors every year, are pretty quiet.
Main beaches in Playa de Muro:
- Muro beach: This beach has lent its name to the whole area, spanning most of Alcudia bay – 13km of fine white sand. Being part of S’Albufera Nature Park, most of it is unspoilt. Its dunes, chill-out bars and moderate swell have turned it into a favourite with families, couples and groups of friends.
- Casetes des Capellans beach: Preferred by locals, this beach is located just between Muro and Can Picafort, but it is still considered as a distinct sand. Surrounded by dunes, it is 430m long, affording some of the most picturesque views of the coastline. The little houses it owes its name to (Casetes) are grouped into a village that belonged to chaplains (Capellans).
- Son Bauló beach: Part of the Can Picafort municipality and adjoining Playa de Muro in the direction of Artà, this small beach (only 300m long) is set in a privileged location in the Son Real natural area, on the mouth of a water course with wonderful native vegetation.
- Son Real beach: Part of the municipality of Santa Margalida, this small beach (300m long) welcomes nudists. It has gravel and a fine sand area, and a mild-to-moderate swell.
- S’Arenal d’En Casat beach: This is one of the few wild beaches still existing in Majorca. It is 1km long, surrounded by stunning dunes and a pine forest that shelters it from the scorching Majorcan sun. It lies past Son Bauló, next to the Son Serra de Marina district.

What to do and what to see in Playa de Muro
- El Parque Natural de S’Albufera: The largest wetland in Majorca, S’Albufera is a protected area housing the largest number of native species on the island. Converted to nature park, it is open to visitors. The Visitor Centre offers valuable information about birds.
- Convent of Santa Anna in Muro: One of the most important religious buildings in northern Majorca, this convent sits in the Old Town in Muro. Enclosed by impossibly high walls. Both the convent and the church were built in the seventeenth/eighteenth centuries in the Baroque style.
- Muro Museum of Ethnography: This is Majorca’s official ethnography museum, with a great many valuable artefacts: farming tools, crafts, ceramics, and old apothecary, a cistern, a Ferris wheel… This museum is housed in one of the most iconic casals: Can Alomar, dating back to the seventeenth century.
- Roman site of Pollentia: In Alcudia, very close to Playa de Muro, there is one of the most important archaeological sites in Majorca and the Balearics at large. Visitors can walk through the site of this Roman village to discover where the houses, the forum or the theatre stood.
- Son Real Estate: Another of Majorca’s environmental assets, Son Real, in Can Picafort, a few kilometres from Playa de Muro, is a 400ha estate containing a traditional Majorcan manor house, prehistoric remains, old sand quarries, pine forests and junipers, fortified towers and many other hidden treasures.

- Water park attractions: A few kilometres from Playa de Muro there is one of the largest water parks in Majorca: Hidropark. - Tasting Majorcan wines: Playa de Muro produces extraordinary wines. Grapes are harvested in the hinterland in the late summer. With DO Pla i Llevant, the wines deliver an altogether different tasting experience. A wine tour of typical Majorcan restaurants the centre of town can be one of the best ways of spending an evening in Playa de Muro.
- Chill-out atmosphere by the sea: Playa de Muro is one of the areas with the highest concentration of bars and restaurants in Majorca. Events in Playa de Muro
Popular feasts and festivals in Playa de Muro offer visitors the chance to get deep into the culture and traditions of this beautiful village in the north of Majorca. Besides the big feast of Saint Peter in June, Alcudia plays host to events and festivals all year round which complete a nice sun and sea holiday.
Major events in Playa de Muro
- January – Big-heads Parade: The Trobada de Gegants is one of the most striking celebrations you can see in Playa de Muro. It is held on Sunday before the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot – the patron saint of animals – who has many devotees in the north coast of Majorca. Big-heads dance and get around in town, amusing locals and out-of-towners alike.
- 17 January – Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot: This is the big fiesta of the winter season in Majorca. In spite of the time of year, the mild Mediterranean climate makes it possible to take to the streets to honour the saint. Bonfires, parades, dancing and party, one after the other. In addition, the feast coincides with slaughter time, which means quality pork products can be grilled outdoors for everyone to have lunch or dinner together.
- February – Carnival in Playa de Muro: Fancy dresses, dance for adults and kids, party… As in the rest of Spain, Carnival in Playa de Muro is synonymous with fun and energy. For several days, restaurants and bakeries produce finger-licking confections like ensaimadas, pumpkin pies or greixoneres… On Tuesday, the Torrada de la Sardina is celebrated with grilled sardines in a big cookout.
- March/April – Holy Week: Religious fervour and tradition seize the streets at Easter time, a feast shared with the early birds of the bathing season, coming from all over Europe. One of the nerve centres in Playa de Muro is the Shrine of San Vicente, where devotees pay tribute to the saints, and then have a popular paella and children’s games.
- June – Saint John’s Eve: The patron saint of Playa de Muro has his feast on 24 June. There are dozens of sports activities, children’s games, cookouts and night parties. On Saint John’s Eve (the night from 23 to 24 June), locals gather round bonfires and throw candles to the sea to fight off evil spirits.
- 25 July – Feast of Saint James: Every year, on the Feast of Saint James, there are day and night races known as Corregudes del Cós de Sant Jaume – a 100-year-old tradition. One of the most striking celebrations is the Encamisada where people paint the streets white wearing shirts of this colour.
- First weekend of August – Muro Night Fair: Muro beach holds one of the most popular night fairs in Majorca. On Saturday and Sunday, the streets get filled with stands selling typical crafts and regional food. There are traditional trade demonstrations too.
- August – Casetes des Capellans Festival: This picturesque small-house village skirting Muro beach has its summer festival on the second week of August. There is a big cookout and many activities for children. The bars and restaurants in the area plan special menus and activities.
- September – Opportunity Market: Shops in Playa de Muro takes their stock to the streets one Sunday in September, wooing shoppers with big discounts.
- November – Pumpkin Festival: Although this festival started off as a traditional farming fair, over the past years it has morphed into a traditional event where pumpkins – a traditional autumn vegetable – are the real stars. A series of stalls are set up offering traditional products and amazing pumpkin-based dishes.
- November to January – Muro Classical Music Festival: Known as the Miquel Tortell Music Festival, this music event unfolds in Playa de Muro in autumn and winter. It is one of the most comprehensive classical music festivals in Majorca, held against the magnificent backdrop of the Convent of Santa Anna, in the heart of town. The programme includes works by the big masters and a couple of music tales for children.
Sports in Playa de Muro
Playa de Muro is Majorca’s best destination for sports lovers. In addition to modern facilities catering to the needs of sportspeople of all levels and in all circumstances, this coastal area in the north of Majorca boasts the perfect weather for cycle touring and kitesurfing, for classics like hiking, golf or sailing, and for sports in fashion like Nordic walking.

- Cycle touring in Playa de Muro: A paradise for cycle tourers by the sea, Playa de Muro offers exclusive, safe bike lanes that can be used by families or groups. Some of them are eco-friendly. - Kitesurfing on Muro beach: Although the Mediterranean is a sea with moderate swell and Muro is a beach with calm waters, the area that is closest to Alcudia can reward kitesurfers with adrenaline-boosting sessions, if the wind is strong enough. There are schools offering intensive courses to visitors who want to try their hand at this exciting sport.
- Golf in northern Majorca: Some of the most popular golf courses in Majorca are to be found in the area surrounding Playa de Muro: Alcanada Golf, Capdepera Golf, Golf Pollensa… Up to six golf courses for players of all levels, in spectacular natural settings adding value to the sporting experience.
- Nordic walking in Majorca: This emerging sport, quite similar to hiking, is attracting more and more fans, being as it is easy and apt for people of all ages.
