Where is Cozumel?

Cozumel is a Mexican island, and its 402 sq ft makes it the third largest island of the country, and with its 79,500 inhabitants, the second most populous. It is located in the Caribbean Sea, in the southeast of the country, 31 miles from Cancun. It is one of the 50 provinces that make up the state of Quintana Roo. It is a flat island made of limestone that comes from the reefs near the island.

What does a vacation on Cozumel have to offer?

  • One of the biggest attractions of the island is the wide variety of tropical fish due to its proximity to one of the world’s most interesting coral reefs discover by Jacques Cousteau in 1961. The clarity of the water allows easy visibility of the underwater wildlife, which makes Cozumel one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas.
  • Many of the tourists who choose Cozumel as their vacation destination do so because it offers a stay filled with nature. After Hurricane Wilma passed over the island, many efforts have been made to restore the damaged ecosystem and today visitors can see up to 27 types of unique vertebrates which are only found on Cozumel, many marine species and a varied flora.
  • Diving enthusiasts will find Cozumel a paradise for this activity. Caribbean waters are known for their turquoise tones and around Cozumel you can enjoy up to 100 yards of underwater visibility. In addition, Arrecifes National Park, a protected region since 1996, is the second largest barrier reef in the world.
