From Palma de Majorca, it is very easy to access the last foothills of the Sierra de Tramuntana situated on the western coast of the island and declared a world Heritage site by UNESCO in 2011, the agricultural area dotted with almond and pine trees displays a natural and human landscape of incomparable beauty. Another place of interest that is close to the capital of the island (17km exactly) is Valldemossa, which owes its well-deserved fame to its charming architecture.
The Roman part of Pollença (or Pollensa), the picturesque streets of Alcudia, the Natural park of S’ Albufera, Canpicafort the evocative castle of Capdepera are located in the north of the island while in the east you can find the spectacular caves of the Drach (coves del drac), located not far from Manacor. All this without forgetting some remarkable examples of Talaiotic culture. While driving through the east of the island, you shouldn´t miss.
Although traditionally known for their ensaimada and sobrassada, Majorcan cuisine specializes in meat, fish and vegetables with a generous use of garlic and olive oil. The island has many other delicacies inspired by Mediterranean cuisine we would strongly recommend you to taste during your stay.
As starters, pa amb oli (brown bread without salt, with olive oil and tomato), which is usually accompanied by fonoll mari (manie fennel) and ham. In the area of typical dishes, the island stands out for its inexhaustible cocas (covered with vegetables, meat or fish), cocarrois (stuffed dumplings, scaldum turkey or chicken stew), frit (roasted offal) (An irresistible stew made with egg, meat and vegetables), tumbet (fried vegetables) or trempó (lettuce, tomato, peppers and potato salad). As for pastries, you must try the Gato Mallorquin (a cake made with milk and almond), the Flaó (cottage cheese cake) and small biscuits known as madritxos.
