What to see in Chiclana de la Frontera
Very few Andalusian towns can compete with Chiclana when it comes to architecture. There are many neoclassical or Elizabethan style buildings and, above all, the religious architecture of Chiclana de la Frontera, which are definitely worth visiting. Among the most famous are remarkable examples such as the Church of St. John the Baptist (Iglesia Mayor) built in a neoclassical style, the chapel of Santa Ana, which is undoubtedly the most emblematic corner of the city, and the convent of Jesus of Nazareth, where one can find a statue of American origin that dates back to the 17th century.
It is also worth mentioning the Holy Trinity church (San Telmo) with an altar depicting Saint Elmo and the Our Lady of Los Remedios. Pay a visit to the Church of San Sebastián, dating from the 16th century, and the Chapel of Vera Cruz - the oldest religious building in the city (dating from the 15th century). Another chapel worth noting is in inside the San Martín Hospital.
In addition, there is also a lot of very impressive civil architecture in Chiclana de la Frontera. Start exploring it with the Clock Tower, which was built in the 18th century on one of the old town gates which was a part of the old Town Hall. And try to visit the Puerco Tower, built in the 16th century and used for war purposes during the Battle of Barrosa on the 5th of March 1811. The beaches of Chiclana
Chiclana de la Frontera’s beaches are just 7km away from the centre of town. They are rather shallow beaches, with low swell and fine sand. They are very quiet, ideal for families or to sunbathe with your partner, since they offer all types of services and are unspoiled and well preserved.

- La Barrosa beach: 6km of fine golden sand make La Barrosa the main beach in Chiclana. It has two sections, one that runs along the sea promenade and another one a bit wilder, with dunes and pines, which extends from the sea promenade to the Puerco Tower.
- Sancti Petri beach: This beautiful beach in Chiclana lies next to the old village of fishermen who used the almadraba technique to catch tuna. It is well known for its splendid sunsets and marina. Juanillos (giants and big-headed figures) are burnt in bonfires as people dance, sing and eat snails – the typical dish of the region at this time of year.
- July – White Sunsets in Chiclana: The island of Sancti Petri is the venue of the White Sunset Party, where there is chill-out music, cocktails and a visit to the castle. Reservations are made at the boat that departs from the marina in Sancti Petri.
- 16 July – Feast of El Carmen: The feast honouring the Patroness of seafarers takes place every year in the form of a procession to La Barrosa beach. Fishermen boats are decorated with dozens of flowers and get into the sea carrying the figure of Virgin Mary.
- August – ‘Chiclana con Salero’ Flamenco Festival: Chiclana is the homeland of flamenco. Big flamenco figures were born in Chiclana and succeeded everywhere else in Spain. This flamenco festival is held in Chiclana in August to promote local singers and dancers.
- October/November – Flamenco cante: ‘Ciudad de Chiclana’ is a flamenco event for cante enthusiasts held on Fridays in autumn
