Cozumel is a flat island based on limestone, with the highest natural point being less than 49 ft above sea level. The island is covered with mangrove forests, home for plenty of small mammals and endemic birds. Cenotes in Cozumel, deep water-filled sinkholes formed by water percolating through the soft limestone soil for thousands of years, are restricted to qualified cave divers with appropriate credentials, so if this is you, this stunning island will be your ideal place. The island is different from north to south. Top events in Cozumel: Cozumel is well known and famous because of three international yearly events:
Bikerfest Cozumel takes place in October, hosting between 1,000 and 2,000 motorcyclists mainly from Mexico, Latin America and The United States. Bikers ride along the island, visiting its main tourist points. During this festival, there’s concerts and many competitions. Plus, it’s totally open to the public.
Ironman World Championship is a magnum event, where athletes from all over the world gather in competition, where the swim course is a point to point ocean swim bordering Cozumel’s coral reef, 2.4 miles in total. The bike course implies 3 laps around the island which means 112 miles, and the run course passes by many of Cozumel’s signature sites, like the Downtown plaza and historic neighborhoods.
The AsTri Cozumel Triathlon is another yearly event where competitors of many different age ranges can participate, since there are six different modes and distances within the event. Thus, everyone from age 14 on can live this powerful experience in one of the most beautiful places in Mexico's Caribbean.
Top beaches in Cozumel: There are some breathtaking beaches to explore in Cozumel, like Playa Caletita located right in the center of the island. This beach is a calm and peaceful place to enjoy the weather in Cozumel and why not, have a good beer. Punta Sur Beach is a double experience since you can not only discover its crystal-clear waters but also explore the eco park located on this side of the island, the lighthouse called Celarain and some Mayan ruins… a full excursion!
If you’re searching for the local beach, there’s Playa Chen Rio, where locals love to spend time, and kids love it too since you have pool-like formations, surrounded by natural rocks. Lastly, for a private beach, accessible only by boat, there’s Isla de la Pasión (Passion Island).
For the land-loving type, you can explore the San Gervasio Ruins and see Mayan ruins from up close. We also invite you to go on a hike through the Punta Sur Ecological Park and discover the local wildlife that will surely have you in awe.
The reefs of Cozumel and its deep waters are famous all over the world. This is because the great Mayan reef passes by these beaches, so underwater life is colorful, vast, well preserved and taken care of.
For more underwater excursions, we recommend you go snorkeling in the Palancar Reef, which is known for its wide variety of sea life and where you can snorkel with manta rays. There's also Columbia Coral Reef, where you can see bright colored fish and turtles too! El Cielo Reef is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean Sea because of the starfish that cover its underwater surface. Chankanaab and Yucab are among the most beautiful reefs to explore in Cozumel.

The average daily temperature is 70°F (21°C). In July and August, the highs range from the mid 80°F (26°C) to the low 90°F (32°C). In December and January, the average temperatures are around 70°F (21°C). Rain can occur from October to January and from April to July.
In Cozumel you can eat a variety of world cuisines, freshly caught fish, and the local typical dishes; among them you will find famous Tikin Xic fish, as well as ceviche and snail with yellow rice.

All year long! You can visit Cozumel between September and November for the triathlon season for unique vacation activities. The peak season is December to April. During summer, from May to July it’s sea turtle nesting/hatching season.
