What to see in Budva
Budva oozes history on all four sides. In fact, there are documents to show that this city was one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. And that is not all, according to local legend; the town was founded by Cadmus the Phoenician, an exiled hero of Thebes who found refuge there for him and his wife, Harmonía.
The area has also been influenced by Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as other subsequent European empires. At present, Budva is the sum of all its visitors, who arrive there from various points of Montenegro and Europe in search of peace and tranquillity.
For all the above, visiting Budva is like taking a trip to the past. Studded with Mediterranean-style buildings, it is known for its spectacular old town, whose Venetian origin can be seen in doors, frames, windows and balconies. Its streets are dominated by a multi-coloured atmosphere, since many of its buildings have been decorated with all the colours of the rainbow.
Among the places to visit in Budva, are three beautiful churches. The oldest, is that of Saint Ivan, from the seventh century. It is followed by the church of Santa María in Punta, a complex built by Benedictine monks that dates back to the year 840. This list is completed with the Church of the Holy Trinity, which was completed in 1804. From a single nave, its interior accommodates the remains of the writer Stjepan Mitrov Ljubisa (1824-1878), born in Budva and considered one of the first realist authors of Serbian literature.
However, the list of things to see and do is not limit to the town itself. If you travel just 8 kilometres southeast you can visit Sveti Stefan, a picturesque fishing village originally from the fifteenth century which has become one of the most visited places of the Budva Riviera (Budvanska Rivijera). Strolling through the streets of this town, you can take in the old-fashioned atmosphere and admire many magnificent examples of popular Montenegrin architecture.
Not far from Sveti Stefan, we find another town with similar characteristics: Miločer, which is often frequented by businessmen and local politicians.
And if you don't mind travelling further afield, you must squeeze in an excursion to nearby Dubrovnik, in neighbouring Croatia, or the photogenic bay of Kotor, both of which have been UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1979.
What to do in Budva
In Budva and its surroundings, you will enjoy 35 first-class beaches, fine sand and warm waters. Moreover, 8 of them have the distinction of Blue Flag, which ensures the quality of the beach in terms of infrastructure, as well as water quality, access and services, among others.
Undoubtedly, the most famous is Mogren Beach. Surrounded by breath-taking cliffs, it is accessed through a 500-metre footpath that starts in the old town.
Other nearby beaches worth visiting, are Ričardova Glava, Pizana, Slovenska and Guvance. However, there are many others further afield, the most outstanding of which are Becici - where the Iberostar hotel is located - Maestral, Jaz, Trsteno, Miločer, Sveti Stefan, Pržno and Kamenovo.

All the beaches of Budva not to be missed
Budva’s beaches are on the Adriatic coast, on the south of Montenegro. They are either sandy or pebble beaches that run besides beautiful fishing villages and offer all kinds of services and facilities in a natural setting. Great for families, the beaches in Budva attract locals and tourists as well as divers, who enjoy the diversity of the Adriatic seabed.
Main beaches in Budva
- Bečići beach: Nearly 2km long, this is the second longest beach around Budva and a true family oasis that couples will enjoy too. The crystal-clear turquoise blue waters, the white sand and high-end beachgoers make it a luxury resort in the Mediterranean basin.
- Mogren beach: The most famous of all the beaches in and around Budva, Mogren is near the Old Town. It is a nice stretch of sand, 350m long, divided in two parts and protected by steep cliffs. It offers services and facilities but is still rather unspoilt, featuring the typical quiet atmosphere of the Montenegrin coast.
- Ričardova glava (Richard’s head) beach: Located next to the Old Town in the Budva peninsula, Ričardova glava is chosen by locals and tourists, as it is lively and features comfy lounge chairs and umbrellas for a relaxing day in the sun without leaving town.
- Jaz beach: Located 2.5km from Budva, in Tivat, Jaz beach stands out from others because it is a 1km stretch of sand and pebble with crystalline waters and a sandy seabed. It is surrounded by crop fields and mountains that make this Montenegrin coast a dream-like area. The water is calm and safe for kids.
- Slovenska beach: This beach owes its name to a group of Czech tourists who used to spend their holidays in this region of Montenegro. Being 1.6km long, Slovenska is the largest beach in Budva. It affords stunning views of the bay on the Adriatic Sea. It is lined with a nice waterfront promenade, tennis courts, volleyball and football pitches, and it offers beach loungers and other services.
- Sveti Stefan beach: Sveti Stefan is one of the most beautiful beaches on Budva bay. It lies in a picturesque fishing village on a nice peninsula. The quiet 700m-long beach invites couples and families to enjoy a romantic or a fun day in the sun.

Major events in Budva
- February – Feast of Svetog Tripuna: The feast of Svetog Tripuna (Saint Tryphon) in Kotor has been held since the ninth century. There is a traditional folk dance or oro, a procession starting at the cathedral, choir singing, church offerings, and many other activities.
- March – Camellia Day: In March, Kotor runs a big camellia ball plus other events where this flower is the star. According to legend, in the nineteenth century a Montenegrin captain brought a camellia back from Japan and presented it to his wife in Stoliv.
- 27 April – Montenegro National Day: On 27 April, Montenegro celebrates approval of the Constitution with public functions and local festivals featuring dance and music, people dressed in traditional costumes and floral offerings.
- May – Lilac Festival: Different colours and traditional costumes characterise the Lilac Festival that has honoured French princess Helen d’Anjou for decades. The festival is medieval in character and attracts locals and tourists from all over the world.
- June – Budva Music Festival: It is considered to be the leading music festival around the Adriatic Sea. The festival welcomes Montenegrin musicians of all styles; local music and dance like the oro take centre stage.
- July – Kotor Children’s Theatre Festival: This festival brings huge audiences to Kotor, on the shore of Montenegro. It is a great cultural plan, perfect for families: street theatre, puppet shows, games and all kinds of activities for the little ones for several days.
- July/August – Budva Theatre Festival: In July and August, the city, the streets and the buildings in the Old Town become the venues of festive events such as poets’ meetings, performances, puppet shows, traditional dance… A major festival nationwide.
- Early August – Carnival in Kotor: Folk music, regional dance, fancy dresses and hubbub take the streets of this beautiful town in Budva Province. A traditional summer carnival of international renown where gaiety reigns supreme.
- August/September – Petrovac Jazz Festival: Petrovac is a very charming town and the venue of a big jazz festival on the coast of Montenegro. There are performances, conferences, workshops, concerts in the open air, jam sessions, etc.
- September/October – Sirun Festival: Budva and the surrounding coastal area hold a wine and fish festival in the Citadel, with seafood, beer and local wine stalls, and hundreds of visitors who travel to enjoy the mild autumn temperatures in this part of the Montenegrin shore.

- Diving offshore the islands of Katia and Sveta Nedjelja: These islands off the shore of Petrovac, a charming village founded in the Middle Ages in the region of Budva, attract the diving and snorkelling crowds. In the village there are spectacular beaches for snorkelers, while scuba divers must take a boat to Katia or Sveta Nedjelja, which feature an amazing seabed and marine life.
- Golf on the coastal area of Budva: The part of the Adriatic Sea shore near Budva is peppered with exclusive golf clubs featuring spectacular 18-hole courses with modern facilities and running international tournaments. Here, golfers can play while admiring the beauty of the Adriatic Sea.
- Hiking in Kotor: The mountains around Kotor are great for hiking in Budva. There are well-signposted trails with different levels of difficulty. The easiest routes take you from the centre of town uphill to the fort on the mountain of Saint John.
- Tennis in Budva: Also known as the ‘new Monte Carlo’, the Budva shore draws more tennis players than any other holiday destination in Europe. There are tennis courts in and near the city. In the summer, they hold an international tournament in which big names in the tennis scene can be seen in action.
