The observatory project is part of Iberostar Group's roadmap to improve the coastal health of the destinations where it operates
Iberostar Group presented, together with the research center IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), the Hotels-Observatory project. The initiative will analyze, for the first time, the effects of climate change on the dynamics of the beaches in the north of Mallorca. The project will generate scientific knowledge and analysis tools to assess the risks and impacts of climate change and propose mitigation actions.
Sandra Benbeniste, Director of Sustainability EMEA at Iberostar Group, emphasized that "at Iberostar, we are focused on providing solutions to the major challenges facing the oceans, based on strengthening tourism and demonstrating our ability to accelerate change towards a more resilient industry. We want our destinations to have a greater capacity for environmental and economic regeneration, and for local communities and visitors alike to continue to live and enjoy the beauty of our coasts."
From the start of the observatory’s operation, which began in September, the physical processes affecting the morphodynamics of Playa de Muro and the changes occurring on this coast will be better understood. More specifically, the effect of variations in sea level and waves on the beach will predict the relevance of these variables in climate change scenarios.
The observatory will be installed in the Iberostar Waves Alcudia Park hotel, located in the north of the island, and will become a center of awareness of the changes occurring in the coastal environment.
