What to do and what to see on Cayo Coco

  • Ciego de Ávila Provincial Museum: An excellent way of plunging into the history of Cayo Coco is visiting the museum in Ciego de Ávila, whose comprehensive collection of documents and artefacts summarises the course of recent events in this Cuban territory.
  • Laguna de la Leche: Located in the municipality of Morón, this lake has whitish sediment that makes the water look like milk. Hence the Spanish name, which means ‘Milk Lake’.
  • Turiguanó village: This picturesque Dutch village was founded in the 1960s as a little farming and cattle breeding community. It is in the hinterland of Turiguanó island, in the municipality of Morón, close to Laguna de la Leche. The Dutch-style houses stand in sharp contrast to their surroundings.
  • La Redonda lake: This spectacular environment by the road leading to Cayo Coco houses many different bird and freshwater fish species.
  • Portada de la Libertad monument: This monument stands right where the crew of the Granma, led by Fidel Castro, disembarked on Las Coloradas beach in 1956. A full-size replica of the ship and records of this history-making landing are on display.
  • Guafe trail: One of the best exhibitions of native culture in Cuba, with burial sites, gods and idols, houses, ceremonial rites… A simple but interesting tour in the area of Las Coloradas beach.
  • Ciego de Ávila zoo: This zoo in the province of Ciego de Ávila is home to a wide array of the animal species living in the Caribbean. It is not too big, but the animals are amazing, especially if you have never been to the Caribbean before.
