Ecotourism in Praia do Forte, Brazil
From our hotels in Bahia, we are committed to promoting increasingly conscious travel. Brazil's quintessential beach destination, Praia do Forte, is home to nature as diverse as it is unspoiled. It is one of those places that offers a glimpse into the future of vacations: tailored to each traveler, connected to their surroundings, and respectful of nature and local culture.
Why Praia do Forte is Brazil's leading destination for conscious travel
The things to do in Praia do Forte have long inspired visitors drawn to its lush blend of pristine beaches and rainforest reaching toward the shore.
This wealth of natural wonders led to legal initiatives designed to preserve this small corner of paradise from the time the first hotels opened in what became known as the "Polynesia of Brazil." Tourism activities began to be regulated, while numerous projects now work to study and restore habitats while supporting local communities.
Nature in abundance between rainforest and ocean
The Atlantic Forest and its lagoons
Near our hotels in Praia do Forte, a green expanse known as the Atlantic Forest stretches along the coast, interspersed with small lagoons. At the heart of it all is a lively fishing village filled with Bahian character, where local eateries, traditional flavors and everyday routines keep its spirit alive.
Reefs and underwater habitats
Beneath the surface lies a network of coral reefs of great ecological value. Together with the seabed, they form a shallow coastal ecosystem where natural pools appear at low tide. Tropical fish swim freely close to shore, and as the tide recedes, the calm water offers a window into some of the area's marine life.
Sea turtles and a commitment to their future
The TAMAR Project
In Praia do Forte, protecting sea turtles is a shared priority. From our hotels in Bahia, we support this community commitment through the TAMAR Project. Founded in 1980, the initiative protects sea turtles by conserving nesting areas, monitoring nests, conducting scientific research, and promoting environmental education.
Iberostar has collaborated with the initiative since 2005. During your vacation, you can learn about the sea turtle monitoring and protection project carried out at the resort complex. Every night, we remove lounge chairs and umbrellas from the beach to give females a clear path during nesting season, while lights are dimmed to prevent artificial illumination from disorienting hatchlings as they make their way to the sea.
A new perspective through Iberostar Wave of Change
The Iberostar Wave of Change movement encourages a different way of thinking about vacations. We have eliminated single-use plastics from guest rooms and continue working to reduce them throughout our hotels, including those in Brazil. In Praia do Forte, our collaboration with the TAMAR Project is accompanied by other measures that continue to evolve. We keep exploring new ways to improve energy efficiency and waste management.
Bahian history and culture
Garcia d'Ávila Castle
Garcia d'Ávila Castle lies just a few miles from the center of Praia do Forte. It is one of Brazil's lesser-known historic sites: the first major Portuguese fortification in the region and the only structure in the Americas with medieval architectural characteristics. Construction began in 1551, with expansions added over the centuries that followed. Today, it is managed by the Garcia d'Ávila Foundation and is open to visitors. Its cultural center includes an archaeological museum and interactive models.
Church of São Francisco de Assis
The Church of São Francisco de Assis stands opposite Praia do Porto, beside Praia do Forte's old fishing quarter, surrounded by craft stalls and traditional stands selling fresh coconuts and cocadas, a traditional coconut sweet. It is a lovely place to watch the sunset. What makes this historic church distinctive is its simple appearance, reminiscent of a traditional Brazilian home. Built around 1900, it has since been restored to preserve its original character.
