Our commitment to the oceans

In 2020, we made a big commitment to sustainability by taking on the important challenge of protecting and improving coastal health.

We set a long term goal to improve the ecosystems that surrounds all of our hotels by 2030. The starting point was assessing the current state of the coasts and then setting clear goals to help restore the coastal health at all destinations. This project took shape through numerous science-based initiatives: we invested in environmental services, supported research into coastal ecosystems at our destinations, and provided scholarships to nurture talent and to science projects focused on protecting the ocean.

Although the road ahead is long, our commitment to the ocean is encoded in our company's DNA and through this pioneer contribution, we hope to achieve our goal.

3 Projects, 3 Big Contributions

Coastal Dune Restoration

A project focused on the restoration of coastal dunes in Mexico and Brazil, where we will be planting 25,000 native plants and launching a program for their conservation.

Coral reef preservation

We will be opening two new coral nurseries in the Dominican Republic to join our five existing coral nurseries in the Caribbean, which are under the care of our scientific team.

Regeneration of green spaces

We will be working on regenerating green areas with native plant species to increase both vegetation cover and the benefits it provides in our destinations in the Balearic Islands, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Why is coastal protection so important?

 

Despite covering only 2% of the Earth's surface, coastal ecosystems provide numerous benefits to mankind and contribute to the well-being of approximately one-third of the world's population.

These ecosystems are essential for human development and the global economy. They protect coastal communities from storms and hurricanes, provide economic livelihoods for these communities, and promote tourism.

Despite their importance to humans, it is estimated that 20% of coral reefs and 35% of mangroves around the world have disappeared in recent years. Without these natural barriers, coastal communities will be increasingly affected.

That is why preserving the health of our coasts and their ecosystems is extremely important. By protecting them, we are building a better future for generations to come.
