Iberostar implements the first 3R department in the sector in 17 Group hotels in Spain
The teams separate, weight and analyse products to reduce waste and determine if they should be reused or recycled.
Within our mission to continue leading a responsible tourism model and be waste-free by 2025, we have implemented 3R teams in 41 of the company’s hotels. Seventeen teams are in Spain and 24 are in the Americas, drastically reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill by separating and recycling products correctly and more precisely.
Currently, 3R teams are made up of a global team of more than 130 people and incorporate circular economy principles (reduce, reuse, recycle). The teams separate, weigh and analyse hotel waste products and determine if they should be reused or recycled. A smart system supports these teams by calculating the total weight of the items separated into each bin and providing real data about the type of waste created. This data helps us make better decisions to reduce consumption even further.
Preventing waste production is key to restoring the world’s ecosystems. In line with the objective set forth in Iberostar Group’s own 2030 Agenda to be waste-free by 2025, we analyse and manage waste at the hotels and before it arrives. We do this by monitoring processes and investing in analysis and reporting tools that allow us to identify the changes we need to make to move towards a circular economy.
