What to buy in Hungary and where?

  • Hungarian handicrafts. Among the highlights of the Hungarian handicrafts are pottery and porcelain. Famous are the Nádudvar black pottery, "Michka" pitchers and hand-painted porcelain from Zsolnay, Herend and Hollohaza.
  • Lace from Kalocsa and Maty.  Lace and embroidery of the Kalocsa or Matyas regions are known for their vivid colours and motives. You can find shirts, skirts, dresses, jackets, bedding, tablecloths, cushions and tapestries. The carpets are also well known in Hungary for their quality. Designed with elegant drawings, they are handmade in traditional Hungarian looms from the last century.
  • Antiques and Hungarian glass. It’s easy to shop for high quality Hungarian glass, antiques and delicate wood carvings in city shops and markets. In Budapest, it is easy to find Habsburg style antiques from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the Castle district.
  • Central Market in Budapest.  At the Grand Central Market in Budapest, visitors can enjoy a variety of typical Hungarian products: spices, pate, Pick and Hertz salami, paprika from Kalocsa, chocolates filled with cherries and cognac, wines and liqueurs, etc. On the second floor of the market, genuine Transylvanian textiles, costumes, embroidery and table linens are sold.
