American Culture

Americans enjoy many local, national and global celebrations. Patriotism is never hard to find here, and citizens will be happy to show visitors how they commemorate special festivities. With holidays occurring consistently throughout the year, there is never a bad time to book a trip to the United States.

  • Super Bowl Sunday. On this day, typically the first Sunday in February, the National Football League’s champion is decided. Football is the most popular sport in the United States, making this one of the most watched and attended sporting events.
  • Memorial Day. Held on the last Monday in May, this federal holiday pays tribute to members of the armed forces who gave their lives in service for their country. Beach days and vacations with friends or loved ones are commonplace during this long weekend.
  • Independence Day. All Americans participate in celebrating the nation’s independence on July 4th. Social gatherings and festive pride can be seen in both large cities and small towns. Given the typical heat of summer, many residents plan family picnics or head out to the beach on this day.
  • Thanksgiving Day. A national holiday dedicated to giving gratitude for the blessings of the year, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Americans traditionally gather with their families and prepare a bountiful feast on this day. In New York City, the popular Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade features colorful floats and massive balloons.
  • Christmas Day. The annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Although Christmas Day is observed on December 25th, Christmas trees and decorations can be seen adorning cities as early as November.
  • New Year’s Day. Before the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, Americans throughout the country gather with loved ones to prepare toasts, set up fireworks and create New Year’s resolutions. During New Year’s Day it is typical for families in the United States to enjoy outdoor activities or watch The Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.
