Nature in Huelva

The province of Huelva, in the mouth of many rivers like the Odiel and the Guadiana, is a very rich land with amazing landscapes including Sierra Morena, Doñana National Park, estuaries and wetlands, or caves like Las Maravillas, in Sierra de Aracena.

Nature in Huelva:

  • Marismas de Huelva wetlands: Huelva’s landscape is characterised by the rivers running through it toward the sea. The river Guadiana, the Guadalquivir and the Odiel shape beautiful wetlands and marshlands where tourists can take a stroll, go fishing or simply lay down to enjoy the sun. The area is home to some of the world’s largest bird and flamingo populations.
  • Doñana National Park: Included on the World Heritage List, Doñana National Park is a gem of Spanish natural areas, with a wealth of endemic species. The park covers a large area of marshes and sand dunes, and is crisscrossed by foot-paths, bike trails and areas you can tour in off-road vehicles.
  • Las Maravillas cave: Found in 1886 and running along 2km, the cave of Las Maravillas is a natural work of art and the first cave ever open to visitors in Spain. It has two levels and offers whimsical forms shaped by water throughout thousands of years. Walking through this cave can be an awesome experience.
  • Caños de la Cruz. A unique spot in the wetlands of Isla Cristina, adjoining Isla Canela. It is an amazing waterway hosting elegant flamingos and storks. From here you can look at the wonderful sunset in Isla Canela.
  • Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche: They are part of the Biosphere Reserve of Dehesas de Sierra Morena, hosting some 30 charming small villages. One of these villages is Jabugo, the place one of the best Ibérico hams is produced. The hiking paths in this mountainous area are clearly signposted and invite visitors to explore its forests and river gorges.
