Of the many corners of the New World that Christopher Columbus explored, there was one that particularly excited him: the very Gibara, home to the bay where he landed on the 28th of October 1492. The discoverer of America had no qualms about describing it as ‘the most beautiful land that man has laid eyes on’. This is perhaps the reason why one of the main squares of the town bears his name.
