The list of reasons to book a holiday in Cuba is almost endless. In fact, this Caribbean country can boast of dreamy beaches, a pleasant year-round tropical climate, landscapes and architecture that leave you speechless; wonderful, soul-warming Cuban food and friendly, hospitable people. And what better way to discover all these wonders than by staying in a luxury hotel in Cayo Ensenachos.
Undoubtedly, one of the biggest attractions of this privileged corner of the world is its magnificent location. Cayo Ensenachos is an almost unspoilt island located off the north coast of the province of Villa Clara. The Bay of Buena Vista, which was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000, separates the main island of Cuba from this key, which is located 30 km offshore and connected to the mainland by a narrow road.
In fact, Cayo Ensenachos is part of a constellation of more than 500 islets known as the Herradura Keys (los Cayos de la Herradura), a maritime area of more than 1,300 km² bordering the second largest coral barrier reef in the world making this one of the most coveted destinations for snorkelling in the Caribbean.
This place is paradise if you want to relax and get away from the world, but there are also numerous attractions a short drive away. This is Cayo Ensenachos: a destination that combines paradisiacal beaches and nature in abundance in an exotic country with plenty to see and do.
There is much to see in Cayo Ensenachos and its surroundings, for example, just 45 km away, the town of Caibarién, also belonging to the province of Villa Clara, is home to dozens of beautiful keys and beaches. Go for a stroll along the boardwalk and admire the nearby Araña Palm Grove, one of the largest palm forests in Cuba.
Just 58 km from Cayo Ensenachos, another interesting town awaits you: San Juan de los Remedios, located 5 km from the northern coast of Cuba. Its historic centre, declared a National Monument in 1980, has several excellently preserved examples of Spanish colonial architecture of the seventeenth century. The main church of Saint John the Baptist, with 13 altars, and the central plaza of Isabel II are its main attractions.
The provincial capital, Santa Clara, is just over a hundred kilometres from Cayo Ensenachos. When visiting the town, don't miss the Plaza de la Revolución, which houses a group of sculptures designed by the artist José Delarray dedicated to Ernesto Che Guevara. It is precisely here where the mausoleum housing the remains of the legendary Argentinean-Cuban guerrilla have been laid to rest since 1997. Touring Santa Clara, it is easy to understand why this is the Cuban city with the best life expectancy.
Cayo Ensenachos is one of the most beautiful places in Cuba. The quiet, uncrowded beaches offer visitors spectacular landscapes and the chance to really get away from it all in this Caribbean country. Among the best beaches, our favourites are Playa Ensenachos and Playa Megano.
In addition, from Cayo Ensenachos you can easily drive to other keys that are located in the north of Cuba. These keys are connected by local roads that join the different islets. Two of the most popular keys to visit are Cayo Conuca, Cayo Brujas, which is home to the nearest airport, just 5 km away, and Cayo Santa María, which has a road link to the town of Caibarién on the mainland which is famous for its extraordinary beaches.
On the other hand, there are many species of flora and fauna that grow in the Cuban keys. Visitors can enjoy tourist programmes designed for nature lovers allowing us to observe reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and mammals. In the case of Cayo Coco, there are some 39 endemic species of fauna and another 22 species of flora.
Don't forget that this area is ideal for practising water sports, especially kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving, a unique experience thanks to the presence of one of the most extensive coral reefs in the world. If you prefer to stay out of the water then why not go for a catamaran cruise in Cayo Ensenachos?
Another thing to do in Cayo Ensenachos is to enjoy some really good Cuban food and exquisite Caribbean cuisine. On this island you can try all kinds of cuisine, from international dishes to delicious creole recipes based on fish, seafood or meat.
If you are travelling to Cuba in summer, try to visit the wonderful fairs of San Juan which take place in San Juan de los Remedios on the 24th June and the 29th August, coinciding respectively with the birth and martyrdom of the patron saint of the town. In December the "Parrandas Remedianas" festivities, which take place between the 16th and the 24th December, include parades with decorated floats.
