Sports in Cayo Largo are closely connected to the landscape: there is no better destination in the world in which to practice water sports, from purely nautical activities such as sport fishing or sailing, to snorkelling or scuba diving along the magnificent Los Ballenatos coral reef, which is among the most beautiful in the Caribbean. When it comes to activities on land, Cayo Largo offers excellent paths on which to explore the mangrove forests and get to know the indigenous flora and fauna of this Cuban island.

Sports in Cayo Largo:

  • Sport fishing in El Pueblito. Sport fishing can be enjoyed in the waters all around Cayo Largo and its islets, but the official centre for this discipline is found in the village. There, excursions are organised from the Club The Avalon to a range of sites on the island’s coastline, and different fishing contests are held all year round.
  • Diving around Los Ballenatos. As well as the excellent dive sites to be accessed from Isla Juventud, Cayo Largo offers 32 sites for fascinating underwater exploration. Divers can observe the swarms of tropical fish, as well as rays, barracudas and many more along the huge Los Ballenatos coral reef. All scuba diving trips start from the Cayo Largo Marina.
  • Hiking in the mangrove forests of the North. The mangrove forests covering the northern part of Cayo Largo conceal an endless variety of paths and unique landscapes in which to get close to Cuba’s ancient natural treasures. There are virgin forests in which no trace of man can be detected, and where the origins of this magical place are easily visible.
  • Kayaking along the coast of Cayo Largo. The calm and crystal-clear visibility of Cayo Largo’s waters make them the perfect environment in which to explore the island’s limits in a canoe or kayak, admiring the view from the sea. Routes can be adapted to suit different levels of experience or for longer or shorter periods of time, and all of them allow visitors to enjoy places that can only be reached by boat.
  • Catamaran and trimaran around the islands. While the majority of trimarans and catamarans offer set excursions, they can be hired privately for a sailing trip around the closest islands to Cayo Largo from the Marina. A captain’s license is required for hiring boats, or they can also be hired with crew.
