Nature, sun and sand in the Iberostar hotels in Bulgaria

Bulgaria, located in the southeast of Europe and in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, combines more than 13 centuries of history and an infinite number of options for lovers of beaches, nature and cultural holidays. Get ready to check it out in person, whilst staying at one of the best hotels in Bulgaria at incredible prices.

Bridging the East and the West, this Slavic country was at its peak between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. It was then when it came to dominate much of southern Europe, before becoming another region of the Turkish Empire. Later, in the 20th century, four long decades of communism made this land almost unknown to Western tourists. Fortunately, the fall of the iron curtain and, above all, the entry of Bulgaria into the European Union in 2007 helped to unveil a tourist destination of the first order.

Bulgaria has it all: ruins of the Roman and Thracian times, Orthodox churches, 160 monasteries that helped to perpetuate national traditions and symbols, magnificent beaches on the Black Sea – where the Iberostar Sunny Beach Resort hotel can be found – and authentic Bulgarian cuisine. This country can even boast of being the cradle of the Cyrillic alphabet, created in the 9th century.

If we add to that the pleasant temperatures of the Black Sea Coast, with temperatures of around 75° F (24° C) in summer, you will understand why Bulgaria is one of those countries that you must visit at least once in your life.

What to see in Bulgaria

One of the main tourist destinations in Bulgaria is the Black Sea area and, specifically, Slanchev Bryag (what means the Sunny Coast), which many do not hesitate to compare to Ibiza. Located near Nessebar or Nesebar - a city near the hotel in Bulgaria of Iberostar -, it is a wonderful bay with a half-moon shape and close to the attractive town of Burgas.

Its 10 km (6.2 miles) of beaches are the main attractions of Nesebar, this city also has many other attractions. One of them is its old town, which has dozens of churches dating mainly from the 14th century. Among the most notable, we should refer to those of the Christ Pantocrator, Saint Sophia, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Paraskevi and the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, as well as the Basilica of the Holy Mother of God Eleusa, originally from the late 5th century.

Another place that is worth discovering is the aforementioned Burgas, the second most important coastal town on the Black Sea. Despite being a modern city, it still preserves interesting buildings from the 19th century. In addition, its streets are dotted with pleasant gardens and green areas. One of its main attractions is the Sea Garden, with a casino built in 1938 and a striking bridge. In the surroundings, it is advisable to visit the protected area of Poda, a natural area with beautiful lakes.

Take the most of your holidays in Bulgaria visiting the national capital, Sofia. Located on a plateau at 500 m (1,804 feet) above sea level, it is home to some of the most spectacular monuments and buildings in the country, such as the public mineral baths, the Palace of Justice, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the Bulgarian Academy of Science and the Boyana church, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.

From Sofia, you can take a bus that, after a journey of 3 hours, will take you to the Rila monastery. This construction, perched on a mountain of more than 1,100 m (3,600 feet) high, exhibits an original bell tower, a building that serves as a residence for monks and a church.

Do not miss the Veliko Tárnao, the cultural centre of northern Bulgaria, located 250 km (155 miles) from Sofia.

Other places you must visit, and which are also UNESCO sites, are the Thracian tomb of Kazanlak, located in the town of the same name, crafted in Adobe during the third or fourth centuries BC, the Thracian tomb of Svechtari, from the third century BC and discovered in 1982, the rock churches of Ivanovo, located 16 km (10 miles) from the city of Ruse; the Madara Horseman, an early medieval relief carved into the rock, east of the village of Sumen, the city of Nesebar, on the Bulgarian coast, the Natural Reserve of Srebarna and the Pirin National Park. The mountains here give rise to the town of Bansko, famous for its ski slopes.

What to do in Bulgaria

If all you ask for on your holidays in Bulgaria is relaxation, you will be sure to enjoy yourself at some of the best beaches of the Black sea in Varna and its surroundings. This was an old summer resort for many visitors from the former Soviet Union, and is a equipped with all the amenities and services you may need.

Just 30 km (18.6 miles) from Varna, is the town of Albena. It owes its fame to its long beach of fine sand, which is about 5 km (3.1 miles) long and up to 150 m (492 feet) wide. By the way: the Varna airport is just 90 km from the Iberostar Sunny Beach Resort.

Bulgaria is also a country with intense nightlife. This is especially abundant in large cities, as well as in some destinations on the Black Sea Coast, such as Burgas or Nesebar. Both have beautiful beaches, an atmosphere that invites you to let your hair down and the chance to rent out boats to travel along the coast.

Moreover, this country is not only perfect for the hot months. If your trip to Bulgaria takes place in the colder months, you can practice winter sports in the mountain of Vitosha, next to Sofia. However, the most important ski resort is Borovets, from where you will enjoy incomparable views over Bila, the roof of the Balkans.

Of course, you can't fail to try the exquisite Bulgarian food, reminiscent of Greek, Turkish and Arabic cuisine. Yogurts, soups and dishes centred on chicken and pork, and don’t forget to try the excellent pastries.
