We had a very enjoyable holiday and would recommend the hotel to others despite some unfortunate flaws as mentioned.
"Staff were excellent and very prompt to respond to any request. Rooms were comfortable and we appreciated the free minibar and safe facilities. We especially enjoyed the jungle theme in the hotel and all the animals that roamed around. Our major complaint is the lack of English TV channels, especially for news. There were only 5 of about 70 in total and these had Spanish sub titles comprising almost exclusively American comedies and films.Frequent Mexican commercials interrupted them. This is unsatisfactory for a hotel of this standard with an international clientele and compares badly with hotel chains visited internationally elsewhere.
The main evening show presentations were OK , not outstanding and and at least two were repeated during our fortnight's stay. Again less than exceptional.
Finally there was a shortage of Reception staff and this resulted in delays in securing attention especially when receiving incoming guests.
"Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Fabulous location (including the "jungle" and animals), very hard-working staff (especially the evening entertainment) nearly all of whom were thoroughly jovial though the odd one or two acted like they didn't want to be there. It may have been the fault of our tour company (Thomas Cook) but we were slightly disappointed we didn't know beforehand about booking up the speciality restaurants (could we have done this in advance of our stay?), nor the fact that USD was a favoured currency - in my ignorance, I came with Mexican Pesos but looking at the USD:Peso exchange rates for excursions etc... it would have been far better for me to come with USD instead.
There were a few niggles: the maid didn't always leave face flannels in our bathroom; the umbrella was removed from our room (though fortunately it didn't rain once during our stay); on two occasions when ringing the front desk, I was answered but then placed on hold indefinitely and forgotten - when I put the phone down and redialled, I straightaway spoke with someone who was available. But as I said, these were niggles. More than a niggle was having to pay for wifi; this was listed in the Thomas
Food was generally good in the buffet espcially the crispy bacon at breakfast (please tell me this was grilled and not deep-fried). One disappointment though was the orange juice; I can only describe it as bland - was it powdered? I'd hoped for fresh OJ particularly at breakfast - there was someone producing fresh juice from pineapples and melons etc... (though watered down) so fresh OJ would have been nice too."
