Resume

"Great resort, no complaints about the food or my room. Issues that bothered me were the volume of the entertainment music; it was far too loud, with the bass turned-up too much, even at the kids entertainment, so we avoided this abuse of our ears. The booming of music could not be avoided even in our rooms. Please do something about this. The thing that annoyed me the most was people saving seats in the shade around the pool and under palapas at the beach. For hours at a time seats were 'saved' with no-one using them thereby just wasting prime spots. In cases where seats are saved but those who saved them are nowhere to be seen, action should be taken to free-up the spots for the use of Iberostar guests who need them. I know this might be difficult to monitor but it partially ruined my holiday, seeing shade seats saved, but unused for a long time by selfish people. "

Good

"I vacationed at the Iberostar Quetzal/Toucan in March of 2014. The resort is located in Playa del Carmen and is on a beautiful beach. We went with 2 other couples. Our room was located near the beach on the jungle side of the villa. If you are looking for upscale hotel rooms, this is not the place. The rooms are all in small villas with 3 floors. Every room has a small balcony, and a mini fridge with beer and soda pop. No other liquor was available in the rooms This resort is an Eco resort which means the plant and animal life are respected and preserved. There were monkeys, birds, small rodents and lizards roaming freely. The rooms were not fancy, but the bed was comfortable and the shower is warm. I suggest bringing your own shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryer, as the ones provided were not good. We asked for an extra bath towel and a better hair dryer and we never received either. Our friends experienced the same for room requests. You will spend most of your time outdoors, anyway. There were 4 or 5 buffets which serve all 3 daily meals. You can eat at your leisure at these places. The restaurant by the pool grills hamburgers at noon, which are delicious. Most foods are American style, but there are fajitas and nachos also. They also have self serve ice cream available at the beach restaurants. The lunch buffets by the pool had the same menu daily, which got a little boring, but it was good. It was fun trying foods I usually don’t eat at home. At night guests can make reservations at one of the many specialty restaurants. Dress is “dressy casual” at these places. We ate at all except the Italian restaurant. Every place we ate was very good, but the Mexican and the Japanese restaurants were both excellent. You will not be disappointed in the food here. The beach and pools area is excellent. It is clean and well maintained. We walked on the beach every day. And it was not rocky or littered at all. There are activities such as para-sailing and snorkeling available. Some are free, and some are not. The “Star Friends” organize activities daily. Beach volley ball, water aerobics, Zumba classes, Samba lessons, etc. go on daily. All are free and fun. The swim-up bar is adults only. Daniel , the bar tender mixes excellent cocktails. Drinks are available at all pools, the beach and restaurants, as well as several bars and nightclubs on the property. I enjoyed trying new drinks at the pool. The only problem at the pool/beach is that people tend to save chairs, and there are not enough for every person who wants one. Be there early and stay in your beach chair or someone will take it. You will be charge $10.00 if you lose your beach towel. Guests may participate in extra activities. These are fun and safe. I suggest booking these online, as they are more expensive if booked through the hotel. I did snorkeling and swimming with dolphins, and loved it. This hotel offers a free show every night, and they are different Sun. – Sat. We thought some were good and others were great. There are 2 nightclubs with live bands. I would recommend this resort to others, especially families. The Star Friends plan activities for children at the kid’s club. The best thing about this resort is the people. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The employees work days and perform at night. They seem to do whatever it takes to make guests have a wonderful time…which we did! "

Will return...

"My second time at Iberostar Quetzal (Playa del Carmen, Cancun) March 24-29 2014. First time in high season. Highly recommended. The entertainment seemed a little 'lame' compared to what I saw in mid-December 2012. Food, drinks, staff, facilities .. great."

Overall, loud and offensive pool scene, uncomfortable rooms and not a very relaxing trip with kids

"We have stayed at the Iberostar Toucan/Quetzal many times since 2003, but not since 2010. This trip was not really satisfying for the following reasons: 1) the room's air conditioner felt like it hadn't been cleaned for many years, my family woke in the morning with horrible running noses, presumably due to mold; 2) we needed to use the air conditioner because the doors couldn't be left open due to mosquitoes, which we never had problems with before; the sliding doors do not have screens, so on the first few nights, we all were horribly bitten by bugs 3) the beds and pillows were very hard and uncomfortable; 4) the shower head in the bathroom leaked and the water pressure was very low. Finally, the pool scene was anything but relaxing for a family. The music was club like, extremely loud and at times, vulgar and offensive with obscenities. Additionally, with kids, it was very difficult to rest near the pool due to the morning and afternoon Star Friend activities, which were also quite loud. All in all, not a very relaxing trip. We are really considering whether we would stay here again, which is unfortnuate due to the natural beauty of the tropical jungle and the generally good food quality. IF there is anything that you can offer to us or do for us to change our perception, please contacty me. Andrew Cathlina 312-269-4413"

.

"Loved the hotel, and all the animals. PROS: Room was very nice. Grounds are very clean. Very friendly staff. Lovely Mexican architecture. Animals galore. Very nice beach. CONS: The food could be better, although I would not say it was horrible. Wish there was an English news channel available and free wi-fi. People dropping towels to save palapas and not coming back for hours. "
