The most important Montenegrin holidays and festivals

• May 21^st.  Independence Day. In 2006, a referendum regarding Montenegro's independence was signed defining the future political situation of the Republic within the Federation of Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegrins celebrate this day as the winning of their nation's independence.

• May. Lilac Day. During the month of May, traditional festivities rooted in Middle Aged religion are celebrated in honor of Helena of Anjou.

• June. Budva Music Festival. This important and popular music festival is held to the south on the Adriatic.

• July 13^th and 14^th. Montenegrin Republic Day. This national holiday commemorates the recognition of Montenegro as an independent state by the Congress of Berlin in 1878.
