Mexico

Main festivals in Mexico

  • August 15.  Day of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Across the country there are celebrations, religious services and processions which honor the Virgin of Charity. There even are places where the festival lasts about two weeks.
  • September 16.  Independence Day. All Mexicans celebrate their independence on this day with numerous events and meetings during which all of Mexico’s pride is on display and it’s therefore an ideal time to be in Mexico. The most important celebrations are held in the Zocalo of Mexico City but the whole country turns out on this day.
  • October 31 - November 2.  Day of the Dead.  According to Mexico's popular belief, the dead are allowed to visit their friends once a year. On this day, the living welcome the souls of the deceased with all kinds of offerings: food, candles, flowers or candy.
  • December 12.  Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. All of Mexico celebrates on this day the appearance in 1531 of its patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe. Thousands of faithful come to her shrine in the capital and thousands prepare food and fruit drinks that they hand out to the pilgrims on the roads leading to the basilica.
