Where is Manaus?
Manaus is one of the most important cities in Brazil, in the northern part of the country. Manaus is the capital of Amazonas state and is near the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Amazon, the largest rivers in the world. It is the economic and cultural capital of the Northern Region of Brazil.
What does a visit to Manaus have to offer?
- The Amazon Jungle. One of the biggest attractions of Manaus is its geographical location. It is a city built in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. The city has a number of ecological parks and an endless series of green areas.
- Fabulous beaches and waterways. One of the best beaches in Manaus is Pompadour beach, located very close to the city and which can only be reached by river boat.
- The vestiges of a glorious past. The boom that the city experienced exporting rubber in the late nineteenth century allowed for the construction of luxurious buildings in the tropical jungle, reproducing European architectural styles. One of the most important symbols of this great economic period is the Teatro Amazonas, where famous European opera companies used to perform.
- Local gastronomy. Visitors can enjoy delicious regional dishes made with fish and vegetables of the Amazon, such as tambaqui, matrinxã, jaraqui, pacu, pirarucú, paiche, tucunare and roasted, fried, or stewed, turkey.
