Hotels in Isla Canela

The activities planned in Isla Canela are for kids and adults to enjoy this place on the coast of Ayamonte, in a natural setting surrounded by historical sites and modern facilities. Ancient ruins and watchtowers come together with shopping malls and traditional markets. On Costa de la Luz, you can do something different every day.

What to do and what to see in Isla Canela

  • Canela Tower: A watchtower that was erected to counter pirates off the coast. They say it was Philip III who commissioned its construction as a defensive structure in Ayamonte. The ebb of the coastline into the sea left the watchtower far from the seashore.
  • Roman mausoleum: Dating back to the fourth century, it stands in Isla del Moral. Part of it sits under the ground, but remains of a Roman tomb that was part of a large fishing site can still be seen. Unearthed in 1981, this Roman site is also known as Cabezo de las Piedras.
  • Virgen del Carmen Church: This nineteenth-century church was built to honour the patron saint of this small fishing village, Virgin del Carmen. The interior of the church is home to a nice wooden figure representing Virgin Mary. On a rectangular floor plan, the temple stands on the bank of the river Guadiana, where locals go on the procession of El Carmen every year.
  • Isla Canela marina: Always very busy, the marina of Isla Canela boasts a nice ambience, bustling with yachts and sailboats, fine restaurants, boutiques, a large shopping mall with activities for kids, and all types of services for water sports enthusiasts.
