Gastronomic specialties in Croatia
- 100% Mediterranean cuisine. Croatian cuisine has many Mediterranean influences. Meat dishes are without a doubt the star here and due to its proximity to Italy, the Croatians also specialise in pizza and pasta.
- Traditional Croatian dishes. Porkolt (catfish stew with red paprika sauce); Prstaci (clams), smudj (pike with cream), Brodet (made from rice) Kulen (a kind of spicy dried sausage), roast stuffed chicken sauce accompanied by quince; Krusnoj peci (turkey with olive oil); Juhe (chicken soup with mushrooms); Ricet agramese, barley and bean soup with dried meat and beef stock.
- Croatian pastries. Pastries made from fruits include Atrukli (pasta rolls filled with cheese, eggs and cream), sweets with honey, macarana cake (made with eggs, almonds and drenched in sour cherry liqueur), orehnjaca (pastry with walnuts) and makovnjaca (puff pastry with poppy seeds).
- Croatian drinks to enjoy. The typical drinks of Croatia are wine (red and white wines of great quality), plum and pomace liqueur, the Maraschino (obtained from the essence of ripe fruit of the Dalmatian maraska cherry tree and the leaves of its branches) and the beer Pivo.
