What to do and what to see in Cayo Ensenachos

  • Che Guevara Memorial: In a huge, 2,000m2 esplanade in Santa Clara, this is the place where the world-famous and much venerated high commander Ernesto Guevara rests in peace. A 7m-high statue of El Che stands on the base and his famous quote, ‘Until victory, always’, is written on it. The memorial was built in 1988, on the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Santa Clara.
  • Armour-plated Train Museum: This open-air museum commemorates one of Che Guevara’s most spectacular feats, when he attacked and derailed an armour-plated train as part of one of the key battles of the Cuban Revolution. Admission is free. There are five monuments and four coaches with items from the famous battle to take a look at.
  • Santa Clara Cigar Factory: The cigar factory in Santa Clara is the place where some of the most famous Cuban cigars are made. You can find carefully made traditional Partagás and Montecristo cigars, buy a bottle of rum or sip a relaxing cup of coffee.
  • Caibarién: Also known as ‘Villa Blanca’, this is one of the most popular coastal villages in Cuba. It has a long history, as well as traditional buildings and cosy streets. Surrounded by lakes and marshes, it has a landscape of its own within the island of Cuba. There are caves and archaeological sites in the area as well.
  • San Juan de los Remedios: Founded in 1510 by a Spaniard, this village lies some 60km from the keys. The colonial town is a National Monument in Cuba. The most remarkable building is the Church of San Juan Bautista, boasting as many as 13 gold-plated altarpieces.
  • Vidal de Santa Clara Park: Named after colonel Leoncio Vidal Caro, this park, one of the liveliest in Cuba, offers colonial trails, benches to sit down and talk to locals, carriages, children playing games… even goats! On Thursday and Sunday, the town band performs live in the open air.
