THE LEGEND OF SULEYMAN THE MAGNIFICENT
The magnificent Turkish coast has always attracted new settlers throughout history and many civilisations and empires formed colonies there. The Egyptians, Syrians, Romans and Ottomans all left their mark. The castle is a remnant of the first settlement in Marmaris which was called Physkos and even now archaeologists are carrying out excavations on this site. The ruins are known to this day as Asartepe and legend has it that Suleyman the Magnificent ordered them to be extended.
Another interesting place to visit is the Tomb of Sariana, located on the northern slopes of Marmaris. Sariana is the new mosque built near the tomb. Renowned for its mysterious powers, Suleyman always visited the tomb during his journeys there. After inspiring news from the oracle, the Sultan decided to extend his control to the islands and, according to legend, the Ottoman legions drank the milk of the Sariana cows for breakfast in order to prepare themselves for battle.
The Ibrahim mosque was built in 1789 and is in the Kemralti area. Its importance lies in its architectural structure and majestic dome. Other points of interest are the Kervansaray and the aqueduct. The first of these is a structure surrounded by arches, built in the most authentic Ottoman stone style in approximately 1545. It has one large room and seven smaller rooms. Nowadays it is used as a place where you can buy authentic souvenirs. The aqueduct was built in 1522 under the orders of Suleyman and is in Iskelebasi, 10 km from Marmaris, heading towards Mugla.
