WALLED CITIES AND PALACES We have already mentioned many of the cultural attractions in our suggested trips around Montenegro. The area was home to different civilisations and its geostrategic location, linking east and west, has always made it a real magnet. Hence its fortresses, towers and walls. There has always been the fear of an enemy attack to take control of the area. Additional cultural sites in Budva include the 7th century Church of St. Ivan, which contains paintings and icons by Venetian artists from the 15th to 17th centuries. It also houses a very complete library and a well-stocked archive with many copies of valuable ancient books. The Church of the Mother of God is one of the oldest in the city and was built in 840 by Benedictine monks.
Kotor also contains many interesting sites such as its perfectly preserved wall, which contains a good number of historical monuments such as the Clock Tower, which dates back to the 6th century, and some 12th-century churches. In any case, Kotor is the city of palaces. The Prince's Palace particularly stands out. Other remarkable examples include Drago Palace, with 15th-century Gothic windows, the 17th-century Bizanti Palace and Pima Palace, with innumerable Renaissance and Baroque details. Finally, it is essential to visit the Napoleon Theatre and the Maritime Museum.
FESTIVITIES Budva is a centre of dynamic and fun activity, especially in the summer months, and lots of festivals are held there.
The Mediterranean Song music festival takes place there in June, with performances by local and international groups.
Another interesting event is the Grad teatar festival, which takes place in Budva Citadel and includes various arts.
It is also possible to attend classical music concerts, and theatre, ballet and song performances in July and August.
Lastly, one of the most remarkable and traditional festival events is Mermaid, a typical seafarer's celebration that takes place in September.
In any case, the best known festival in Montenegro is Mimosa, which takes place in Herceg Novi.
