FESTIVALS
The most important religious celebration in the year is Easter, which changes from year to year, but is always in March or April. There are then services in parish churches every day and the odd procession through the streets on Good Friday.
15 August is the feast of the Assumption and the parishioners go to St. Mary's Church.
28 October is the island's official public holiday and there are parades through the major cities.

THE IMPORTANT LEGACY OF MINOAN CULTURE
In the Rethymnon area you can visit the remains of the classical Greek polis and then Roman town of Eleuternas, which is an important archaeological legacy along with the Crisi Visi Roman aqueduct.

In any case, the best option is to go to the capital Heraklion to see the remains there. It is 65 kilometres from the hotel and one of the largest towns in Greece with 100,000 inhabitants. Knossos, the famous Minoan palace, is five kilometres away, which along with Villa Adriana has columns, paintings and a labyrinth inside that remind one of Theseus and the minotaur. In the surrounding areas are a multitude of villages with Minoan grottoes such as Amnios and Alcalojori. The palaces of Festos, Gortis and Agia Triada provide a good selection of the Minoan legacy.

The western part of Rethymnon and Chania has the purest, most authentic charm of Crete. Going around the villages and meeting the hospitable, extrovert people is a great way of finally connecting with the place.
