AUTHENTIC ROOTS
Linked to the land by a narrow strip and lending its name to the small peninsula on which it stands, Nessebar is the main attraction in this area. Due to its unusual architectural style and legendary status this town is a truly special place. Once a Thracian settlement, it was conquered by the Romans and then taken over by Khan Kroum in 812 when it became an annex of Bulgaria. Among some of the most relevant monuments decorating this town are the numerous churches characterised by their clayey tones. The Pantocrator church which dates back to the 13thcentury is a good example of this. Another point of interest is St. Stephen's Basilica, built between the 10th and the 11thcentury, and remodelled and enlarged five centuries later. Finally, it is important to mention St. Paraskeva's church, which stands out for its decorative façade.

FESTIVALS
 Ancient Greek Inspiration
The Bulgarina celebrations, linked to the times of Greek influence when man worshiped and feared the elements, are very colourful and interesting.
Shrovetide, which marks the start of spring, dates back to Thracian times and originates from the Greek God, Dionysus.
Izarouvane has Orthodox roots and expresses love for one's family and the rest of the community.  Every year on 1st March, martenitsas, small red and white figures symbolising the prosperity of spring, health and happiness, are taken out onto the streets. In August, in the neighbouring town of Sozopol (65 km) they celebrate the Apolonia festival. To commemorate the town's legend many traditional Bulgarian musicians take to the streets and other parts of the area to liven up the summer nights. Another important historic anniversary is celebrated in May. It is called the Festival of the Rose and takes place 320 km away in Rose Valley near the small towns of Karlovo and Kalofer.
